Calf pain physio Frankston
Calf pain when walking, running or pushing off
A calf strain, recurring tightness or pain when pushing off can make it difficult to judge how much activity to do. Your appointment with Ash focuses on how the problem started, calf strength and the demands of walking, running or sport, so your rehabilitation has a practical starting point.
Calf pain has different possible causes
Symptoms may follow sprinting, running, jumping or a sudden push-off, or build gradually after a change in training or activity. Musculoskeletal causes can include a calf muscle strain, overload, Achilles-related problems or pain referred from the back. Assessment matters because not every painful calf is simply a muscle injury.
Seek medical assessment immediately for unexplained calf pain with new swelling, warmth or redness, as this may indicate a blood clot. Call 000 for chest pain, difficulty breathing or collapse. Do not wait for a routine physiotherapy appointment.
What your assessment may include
Ash will discuss how the pain began, recent training or activity changes and how it affects walking, stairs, work, running or sport. Assessment may include calf and ankle movement, strength, balance, hopping or running tasks when appropriate, along with checks for symptoms referred from the back or other areas. If medical review or imaging may be appropriate, Ash will explain why.

A practical return-to-activity plan
Your plan may include advice on activity and training load, progressive calf strengthening, mobility, balance, running or sport-specific exercises and hands-on physiotherapy. Dry needling may be considered as one part of treatment when suitable for you and with your consent. Ash will help you build things up at a pace that fits your symptoms, strength and goals.
Pain closer to the achilles tendon?
If your main concern is around the tendon at the back of the ankle, read about Achilles tendon pain and return to running. Assessment helps distinguish tendon, muscle and other possible sources of symptoms.
